History and Projects

1935   Janis Kravis was born in Riga, Latvia.

1944   Escaped with family to Sweden in a small fishing boat when the German army was evacuating Latvia and the Russian army was occupying it for the second time.

1950 Family emigrated to Canada and settled in Toronto.

1959 Graduated from School of Architecture, University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Architecture degree.

Started Karelia Studio Limited in the fall of the same year in order to promote and make available well designed, quality products to the Canadian market.

1962 While working at the architectural office of Fairfield and DuBois, designed interiors and furniture for Oxford University Press and Central Technical School Art Centre.

1963 started own architectural and design practice.

1964 Designed "karelia" retail store in the Lothian Mews, on Bloor Street west.

1964 Designed the restaurant complex "The Three Small Rooms" in the Windsor Arms Hotel in Toronto. This project was awarded the Ontario Tourism award in 1967 and Ontario Association of Architects 25 year Award in 1991.

1967 Received an "Eedee" award in the "Lounge Seating" category from the Department of Economics and Development.

1968 Designed interiors and furniture for "Number-Twenty-Two" lounge at the Windsor Arms Hotel and the Credit Valley School of Nursing.

1969 Formed Janis Kravis Consultants Limited.

Founded Karelia International Limited, contract division of Karelia.

Designed interiors and furniture for York Regional School of Nursing.

Designed the Inn on the Park Athletic Club.

1970 Designed interiors and furniture for the University Centre, Carleton University, Ottawa.

Designed interiors and furniture for Four Seasons Hotel, Belleville.

1971 Designed interiors for New Pool Building, Kensington Towers Apartments, Toronto.

Designed interiors for Exhibition Building, New Town of Erin Mills.

1972. Designed interiors and furniture for Young and Rubicam Advertising Agency, Toronto.

1973 Designed interiors and restaurants for the Constellation Hotel, Toronto.

1976 Designed "karelia" retail store in the Manulife Centre. 

Elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy.

2004 Elected Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
